Synchronous, Wound Rotor and AC Motors

Synchronous, Wound Rotor and AC Motors

When considering the life cycle costs of your valuable motor assets, why take a chance on a cheap shop that doesn’t pay attention to the details?  When you select us to work on your motor, you get a partner who understands your sense of urgency and also that you need information to make the best possible decision.  We will investigate the motor, the application, and how these fit into your process, so that we know both the details and how they affect the big picture.  By giving you options and information, together we will lower cost and extend mean time between failure.

We are experts in the repair of all AC motors, synchronous motors, and wound rotor motors from fractional horsepower specialty units to 7,000 horsepower, high voltage machines.  Our standards meet or exceed the guidelines of ANSI/EASA AR100 and are some of the most rigorous in the industry.  So whether you have your own specifications or we are following ours, you can rely on the job being done right.

Capabilities

core_lossWhen you look at your motor vendor, there are many factors that should be considered.  We start with our fleet of more than 30 vehicles (the largest of which having a GVW of 52,000 lbs) which ensures that we can transport your motors in a safe, efficient manner with no waiting.  Our facilities are all equipped with numerous overhead cranes (up to 35 tons), so we can safely move your motor and all components during the repair process.  When it arrives at our facility, we will tag the unit with a unique job number, begin the photographic documentation (which continues throughout the repair process) and perform initial tests on the windings.  The unit will be disassembled, thoroughly cleaned and baked dry.  Following drying, the motor will undergo a series of inspections to evaluate the root cause of the failure.  Our technicians perform all necessary measurements with calibrated instruments to evaluate the condition of the bearing journals, end bells, rotor and all mechanical components.  We then perform a series of electrical tests on both the stator and the rotor.  The inspection will culminate in a detailed quotation and scope of work.

Repair

end_bellWhen authorized to proceed, our team will repair your motor, as directed, without taking any shortcuts.  Our fully equipped in-house machine shops will restore critical dimensions to within even the most exacting of tolerances.  We have skilled, experienced machinists many of whom are also proficient in all types of welding so that you can be sure your repair is done correctly.  Repair of slip rings and barrels requires a level of attention to detail that many shops will not attempt, but we are experts in these critical parts of every wound rotor and synchronous motor.

Winding

Winding

If rewinding your motor is necessary, whether it is random or form wound, we are definitely the team to choose.  Our winders average more than 20 years of winding experience!  Our facilities are each equipped with temperature controlled burn-out ovens, state-of-the art core loss testers, computer-programmed winding systems and bake ovens so that your job proceeds without delay.  To help promote the lowest life-cycle cost, we always use high quality inverter duty wire for windings.  The insulation system will be manufactured to meet your specificaton or will conform to class H insulation systems requirements.  Depending on your preference, varnish can be applied via the traditional dip and bake process or in one of our three vacuum impregnation systems (VPI).  For slip ring motors, we are experts at field coils and amortisseur windings, as well as all aspects of brush performance, so that you can be assured that there will be no issues with the electrical performance of your synchronous or wound rotor motor.

Final Inspection

vertical_at_testAs the repair has progressed, you should expect our team to regularly check in and discuss the progress of the job along with key issues unique to your motor, such as how leads are marked, potential issues with your power transmission parts, and any opportunities to extend the life of your asset or lower your costs.  We will sweat the details and communicate with you every step of the way.  Once all necessary repairs have been made, final assembly and test can begin.  Each rotating component is precision balanced.  We have in-house balancing capabilities up to 25,000 lbs.  Our expert technicians will assemble your motor using new, premium bearings.  The fully assembled motor will be subject to a final test run that can include load testing to 1000 horsepower.  During the test run, we will collect bearing temperature and vibration data.  The vibration results will be evaluated by one of our Level II vibration technicians.  Prior to shipment, the motor is painted and our shop supervisor performs a final quality audit to ensure your motor is ready to go.  All of the data collected during the repair process can be made available to you in the form of customized reports that will provide your organization with a full understanding of the incoming condition of the motor and the efforts undertaken to restore it.
